On the road to COP17: Kaveh Zahedi & Astrid Schomaker on agrifood systems and FAO–CBD collaboratio

FAO and UN Biodiversity are collaborating to help countries meet biodiversity commitments, a topic discussed at recent SBI-6 meetings in Rome, ahead of COP17 in Armenia. An FAO analysis shows biodiversity loss already undermines agrifood systems and food security in many nations, highlighting the critical need to integrate biodiversity into agrifood policies.

Approaching the 2030 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework deadline, progress requires concrete actions. Countries can implement agroforestry, restore degraded lands, and promote sustainable livestock and aquaculture. These efforts simultaneously advance biodiversity, climate resilience, and food security. Success depends on farmers, producers, and consumers. FAO and UN Biodiversity remain committed to supporting countries in translating global commitments into tangible action.

Împreună pentru redresarea sturionilor emblematici din Marea Neagră

Sturgeons, ancient fish predating dinosaurs, are emblematic yet critically threatened in the Black Sea. Their alarming status and complex life cycle led the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) to initiate a pilot project for their recovery.

This BlackSea4Fish project gathers crucial data on sturgeon biology, ecology, and interactions with fisheries. It involves awareness campaigns, fisherman engagement, and assesses accidental catches and illegal fishing, forming the basis for well-documented management strategies.

Investing in Bhutan’s Agrifood Future

The Hand-in-Hand initiative facilitates socially inclusive agricultural investments in 8 of Bhutan's 20 districts. It aims to unlock untapped potential, boost farm incomes, and reduce poverty by prioritizing transparent, innovative, and impactful investments in Special Agricultural Products (SAP) for production and market advantages.

The government supports these efforts by providing access to state land, developing key infrastructure (roads, irrigation, energy), and fostering an enabling policy environment. Recent incentives include investment allowances for priority sectors like agriculture.

FIDAC: mécanisme national renforcé pour la résilience agricole face au climat

Tunisian farmers face significant annual losses from increasing climate hazards. To address this, the FAO, under the National Adaptation Plan (PNA), is bolstering Tunisia's FIDAC fund. This vital national mechanism compensates farmers for natural disaster damages and builds resilience.

To ensure transparency and efficiency, regional committees received comprehensive training. This enhanced their skills in damage assessment and farmer support, enabling fair and reliable compensation. The strengthened FIDAC now better protects Tunisian farmers from the growing impacts of climate change.
