Sadie-Phoenix Lavoie, a 22-year-old Anishnabe woman from Sagkeeng First Nation, co-chairs the Onjisay Aki Youth Climate Summit. She is pursuing a BA in Indigenous Studies at the University of Winnipeg, serves as VP External for the UW Students' Association, and co-founded Red Rising Magazine.

The First Peoples-led Onjisay Aki Youth Climate Summit was held at Turtle Lodge from September 16-19, 2016. On International Peace Day eve (September 21, 2016), participating youth released a spiritually-informed statement for international peace and healing.

Dave Courchene (Leading Earth Man) introduces Onjisay Aki, an Anishinabe term meaning "a changing Earth." This concept reflects the Original Peoples' millennia-long presence and the urgent need for humanity to adapt as our planet transforms. It also signifies a collective journey we must undertake.

Our ancestors established a path rooted in Indigenous values of respect, guiding us toward healthy relationships with each other and the Earth. Future generations depend on us to follow this trail of peace. The first Igniting the Fire Gathering, initiated by Elder Dave Courchene, occurred in 2006 at Manitou Api, a sacred site in Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park. This event, featuring Elders Robin Greene and Don Cardinal, reunited Original Peoples, with turtles symbolizing new life and Indigenous rebirth.

Now an annual event by Turtle Lodge, Igniting the Fire is open to all cultures, bringing nations to Manitou Api to share knowledge and ceremonies, with Elders transferring wisdom to youth. On November 28, 2015, at Turtle Lodge in Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba, Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers presented The Great Binding Law. This significant presentation, led by Anishinabe, Nehetho (Cree), and Dakota representatives, responded to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs' request for guidance on the National Energy Board's pipeline proposals.

The Elders, including Oshoshko Bineshiikwe (Blue Thunderbird Woman) and Nii Gaani Aki Inini (Dave Courchene), shared their wisdom. A video of part of their presentation is available, though sacred ceremonies were not recorded. Symon Ptashnick filmed the event.

The world faces a global refugee crisis, with 65 million people displaced. David Miliband, drawing on his family's refugee history and political experience, argues that failing refugees betrays our shared history, values, and interests. He explores the crisis from the Middle East to Europe, emphasizing that both governments and citizens must act.
